Funds for the promotion of film in Guatemala
In Guatemala, there are several funds and programs to promote film production. Altura Maya Films™ provides technical advice that may be relevant to your projects.
Fondo de Desarrollo de la Industria Cinematográfica (FDIC)
It is a fund created with the objective of promoting and supporting the production, distribution, and exhibition of Guatemalan film projects.
Administration: It is generally administered by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala.
Purpose: To provide financial support to projects that contribute to the development of the local film industry, including the production of short films, feature films, documentaries, and other audiovisual content.
Fund for the Promotion of Art and Culture
Although this fund is not exclusively dedicated to film, it does include projects related to artistic creation, and cinematographic initiatives that promote Guatemalan culture are eligible.
Administration: The Ministry of Culture and Sports also manages this fund.
Purpose: To finance projects of cultural interest, supporting both artists and cultural projects with social impact.
Audiovisual Production Promotion Program
Some municipal governments in Guatemala offer resources for the production of audiovisual content that promotes local culture or tourism.
Administration: At the local level, funds are usually managed by mayors' offices or the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA).
Tax Incentives for Audiovisual Production
The Guatemalan government has occasionally sought to implement tax incentives to attract foreign productions or support domestic production. This could include tax reductions for producers operating in the country.
Objective: To incentivize the film industry through tax benefits that promote local employment and investment in film infrastructure.
International Funds
IBERMEDIA Fund: This fund is geared more toward Latin American film and television projects, and Guatemala is eligible. It provides support for the co-production and distribution of Latin American films and can be a valuable resource.
Latin American Film Production Assistance Fund (LIMA): In collaboration with other countries in the region, Guatemala can also access international funding for film, such as this fund created to support productions in Latin America.
Funds from NGOs and International Foundations
Several international organizations, such as the Ford Foundation , UNESCO , or Cultural Survival , sometimes offer grants or funding for cultural projects, including film productions that highlight issues of identity, human rights, and local culture.
Crowdfunding Platform
Fondeadora, Kickstarter, Indiegogo : Although not a governmental or institutional fund, crowdfunding has become a useful tool for many emerging filmmakers in Guatemala. These platforms allow filmmakers to obtain funding from a global audience interested in their projects.
